Rameen Mohammadi October 10, 2016

2 Agenda What is Applied learning?
What we have already reported during 15-16 What we needs to report in 16-17 Progress to date Issues ahead

3 Applied learning refers to an educational approach whereby students learn by engaging in direct application of skills, theories and models.

4 Student need to apply knowledge and skills gained from traditional classroom learning to hands-on and/or real-world settings, creative projects or independent or directed research

5 Activities are approved as applied learning if, and only if, they meet the criteria listed:
The Activity is Structured, Intentional and Authentic The Activity Requires Preparation, Orientation and Training The Activity Must Include Monitoring and Continuous Improvement The Activity Requires Structured Reflection and Acknowledgment The Activity Must be Assessed and Evaluated

6 Some forms of applied learning listed by SUNY that they have requested for us to report on in SUNY’s Institutional Research system called SIRIS: Capstone, senior project, performance, or other creative work that occurs as a culminating experience for a student in an accredited class or program International and Domestic Travel/Exchange Civic Engagement & Community Service: Volunteerism and community service performed Research: Mentored, self-directed work that enables students to make an original, intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline Co-op or internships Practicum

The Center of Experiential Learning (CEL) CEL supports students through workshops as well as a 100-level preparatory course for internships and co-ops We employ best practice approaches by expecting clear learning outcomes, complimentary investigation on disciplinary areas relevant to the internship, reflections, supervisor evaluation, faculty oversight and grade assignment Similarly, discussed independent research opportunities, international experiences…

11 What are the questions for May 2017?
Do you currently measure any impacts of campus-approved applied learning on the local community and workforce

12 Describe the opportunities and challenges the campus would face in including approved applied learning activities as a local graduation requirement.

13 Please provide an overview of the various types of on- and off- campus collaborators/facilitators who engage in Applied Learning. Describe any existing methods used to support intentional and reciprocal relationships on and off campus. Describe how your campus engages new community partners in applied learning. Based on your answer to questions 1-3, please describe your campus plan for supporting current and future intentional and reciprocal partnerships.

14 will your campus include approved applied learning activities as a local graduation requirement?

15 Progress made in identification of courses that needed to be Applied Learning experiences….
IR has completed review of our academic course offerings with academic departments IR reports that 93% of our students have at least one Applied Learning experience since the majority have a Capstone requirement that faculty have indicated meet the definition for Applied Learning

16 Tasks ahead… Develop responses to the questions from SUNY; most significantly whether we want a graduation requirement for Applied Learning. Having an ad hoc committee looking at this issue where the membership is broader than CEL Advisory that is composed of faculty and staff working on internship, co-ops.
