Aim To inform readers about the eye, how it is structured, and its purpose and how to care for the eye.
4
Introduction Eyes are the organs of vision. They detect light and convert it into electro-chemical impulses in neurons. The human eye can distinguish about 10 million colors.

How the Human Eye Works The human eye can be compared to a camera which gathers, focuses, and transmits light through a lens to create an image of the environment. In a camera, the image is created on film; in the eye, the image is created on the retina, a thin layer of light sensitive cells at the back of the eye. The lens of the eye bends, or refracts, light that enters the eye.
7
Parts of the Eye
8
The cornea The cornea, which is a clear, transparent covering in the front portion of the eye also contributes to focusing light on the retina. Nerve fibers extending back from the retina's nerve cells come together behind the retina to form the optic nerve, a "cable" of nerve fibers connecting the eye with the brain.
9
The optic The optic nerve transmits messages about what we see from the eye to the brain. Like a camera, the human eye controls the amount of light that enters the eye through the lens under various lighting conditions.
10
Eye Conditions
11
•Age-related macular degeneration: A loss of central vision in both eyes.
•Black eye: Swelling and discoloration around the eye as a result of injury to the face. •Cataract: A clouding of the lens, which hinders the passage of light through the lens. •Conjunctivitis: Also known as "pinkeye,” conjunctivitis is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear layer that covers the front of the eye. It is usually caused by allergies, a virus, or a bacterial infection.

How to care the eye
13
Eye care Eat lots of fruits and veggies! Carrots, loaded with beta carotene are especially helpful in maintaining healthy eyes. That's because beta carotene is an antioxidant that reduces the risk of macular degeneration.[1]
14
Eye care Avoid wearing contact lenses for more than 19 hours. This can cause permanent sight damage as well as extreme discomfort to your eyes. Don't wear glasses too long either. Especially 3-D glasses!
15
Eye care Use allergen-reducing eye drops sparingly. Using an allergen-reducing eye drop during allergy season to 'get the red out' and sooth itchiness may help on a limited basis, but chronic daily use can actually make the problem worse.
