2 INTRODUCTION Horses are beautiful animals! They are quick, strong and graceful. They also have soft fur and are silky around the muzzle. Horses belong to a family of mammals called Equidae. Their scientific name is Equus Ferrus Caballas. Horses are grazing animals and mostly eat hay and grass. They also eat apples and carrots. This animal can live up to 25 to 30 years.

3 Breeds of horses There are over 300 different types of horse breeds. Horse breeds come in different sizes, skills and colours. Hot blooded horses are fast and are bred for speed and racing. Cold blooded horses are normally for strength and heavy work. Warm blooded horses are a combination of hot blooded and cold blooded horses and are often used for racing competitions.

4 Different names for horses
Depending on whether horses are male or female and how old they are, they have different names: Foal - a baby horse less than a year old. Yearling - a young horse between the ages of one and two. Colt - a male horse less than four years old. Filly - a female horse less than four years old. Stallion - a male horse older than four years old that is not a gelding. Gelding - A castrated male horse. Mare - a female hose older than four.

5 Horse Colours Horses with different colours have different names. Here are some of the main colours: Bay - light reddish-brown to dark brown with a black mane, tail, and lower legs. Chestnut - reddish color with no black. Grey - black skin, but a mixed coat of white and black hairs. Black - entirely black. Sorrel - a type of chestnut with a very reddish coat. Dun - yellowish or tan coat. Palomino - a light golden color. Pinto - a multicolored horse with patches of red, brown, white or black.

Police horses Therapy horses Pack horses Transportation horses Carriage horses Racing horses; gallopers, trotters and steeple chasers
