TYPES OF TESTS Placement tests
Designed to place students in levels of instruction: beginner, intermediate, advanced Assess 4 language skills: Reading, Writing, Grammar and Listening/Speaking Diagnostic tests: Diagnose what students need Pre-tests Achievement tests: Assess what students have achieved Post-tests, progress tests Proficiency tests: Measure language ability without regard to any course of instruction TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, SPEAK

A GOOD LANGUAGE TEST Fair: Material taught
Valid: Based on what it taught Clear: Easy to read instructions and questions Easy to grade: Objective with some subjective grading based on what is being tested Reliable: Consistent results when given more than one time Rubric grading: Clear goals for proficiency of language
