II Основной этап (Чтение текста)
PRE-READING a) Listen to the sentences and try to guess what famous person we’re going to read about today (write down the underlined words with translation on the board and read one fact at a time, and after each fact ask the pupils “Who am I?”). I was born in Florida, Missouri, in 1835. My real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. I was married and had four children. I had a thick grey moustache. I worked as a river pilot, a silver prospector, a reporter. I was a famous writer. I published “The adventures of Tom Sawyer” in 1873.

Pre-reading A lecture, a lecturer A literary club A club member
b) Before reading let’s look at these key words and try to predict what we’ll learn about Mark Twain from the text. A lecture, a lecturer A literary club A club member Funny stories To laugh To do one’s best – сделать всё возможное To notice - замечать To tell jokes Deaf - глухой
8
While reading a) Read the text and say how it can be named (SB p.94 Ex. 48).
9
Post-reading a) Decide whether the following sentences are true or false, give your reasons. Mark Twain wasn’t a lecturer. He told sad stories. The club member laughed at his jokes. The club member’s uncle didn’t laugh at his jokes. The old man didn’t laugh because he couldn’t speak.
10
Post-reading All the members of the club laughed at his jokes.
b) Put the sentences in the correct order. All the members of the club laughed at his jokes. Once a club member asked him to make his uncle laugh. But the club member's uncle didn’t even smile. Literary clubs often invited Mark Twain to speak. The matter was that he was deaf. Mark Twain tried hard and told a lot of funny stories.
11
Post-reading What was Mark Twain? What did literary clubs often do?
c) Retell the text using these questions. You can start with “This is a story about Mark Twain”. What was Mark Twain? What did literary clubs often do? What did one the club member ask Mark Twain to do? What did the writer tell at the lecture? How did people react? Did Mark Twain keep his promise to the club member? Why?
