The Great Patriotic War began on June 22, There were two periods in it: at the beginning of the war, in 1941, the Soviet troops had to retreat and only in 1942 Soviet troops began their counter-attack. But at the beginning of 1942 fascists came up to the Volga river. It was necessary to stop the enemy by all means. So it was decided to meet them in battle near Stalingrad.

3. The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the biggest battles of the Great Patriotic War.

4. The Battle of Stalingrad lasted for 200 days.

5. The most violent fights took place on Mamaev Kurgan in the centre of Stalingrad.

6. On February 2, 1943 at 16 o'clock the historic Battle of Stalingrad ended. 24 generals of Hitler's army, led by General Field Marshal F.Paulyus were taken as prisoners.

11. On November 10, 1961 the city of Stalingrad was renamed as Volgograd.
On May 8, 1965 by the Decree of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR Volgograd was conferring the honorary title "Hero City".

12. In Volgograd there are many monuments raised in the memory of the Great Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
