Renal cell carcinoma, clear cell type
Renal cell carcinoma, clear cell type. Clear cell renal cell carcinoma has a very characteristic gross appearance, yellow coloration from the glycogen in the tumor cells and hemorrhage due to the prominent vascularity of the tumor (A). Histologically, the neoplasm is composed of clear cells with a background of prominent vascularity (B). Although the tumor cells appear bland (i.e., no pleomorphism, few mitotic figures), renal cell carcinoma is a highly malignant tumor and known for its propensity to metastasize to unusual locations.
