Q. How can you determine how old a rock is or how old something found in a layer of rock is?
A Relative dating 2. Absolute dating (from radioactive decay)
13
Concepts of Geologic Time
There are two different frames of reference: Relative Age Dating -- involves the process of determining when something formed or happened in relation to other events. it does not tell us how long ago a particular event occurred, only that one event preceded another. Absolute Age Dating -- involves the process of determining when something formed or happened in exact units such as days, months, or years. it gives us numerical information about time.
14
Radioactive Decay Radioactive decay is the process whereby an unstable atomic nucleus spontaneously changes into an atomic nucleus of a different element.
15
Relative Dating This type of dating tells us which geologic event happened first, but does not give an exact date to which something happened. Relative dating involves placing events in their proper chronological sequence, that is, in the order of their occurrence.

Youngest? Oldest?
19
Principle of Superposition:
states that, in a sequence of undisturbed sediments (strata), the oldest layers are at the bottom of the sequence and the youngest layers are at the top. C B A A is oldest layer and letter C is youngest layer
