You will need a partner. You may work in pairs or in 4’s
Send one person to get Aprons Send one person to get goggles. YOU MUST WEAR SAFETY GOOGLES DURING THE LAB. THE SOLUTIONS USED TODAY CAN CAUSE MAJOR IRRITATION TO SKIN AND EYES.

Directions for making “gloop”
Column 1 – Glue + Food Coloring Column 2 – Add Solution A Column 3 – Add Solution B Predict – same as partner. Hypothesis – same as partner. Observation Add the glue from the cup to your baggie. Add 2-4 drops of food coloring to the glue Seal the bag and mix the solution up Draw a Diagram Predict – same as partner. Hypothesis – same as partner. Observation Add 10mL of Solution A to the beaker(measure using the markings) and mix thoroughly in the baggie. Draw a Diagram Predict – same as partner. Hypothesis – same as partner. Observation At my signal, add a full pipet periodically (4 total) of Solution B to the beaker using the plastic pipette and mix thoroughly Make observations. Rinse results with water. Draw a Diagram Clean Up Area, Baggies in the trash. You may play with gloop until bell rings but MAY NOT LEAVE THE CLASS with it.

Copy and answer the following questions (on LEFT SIDE of lab notes)
The glue contains a polymer called polyvinyl acetate resin. We changed the polymer’s behaviors twice in this activity; once when we added water and the second time when we added borax. Copy and answer the following questions (on LEFT SIDE of lab notes) When we added water, what process was occurring; dehydration synthesis or hydrolysis? Describe the glue after water was added. When we added borax, what process was occurring; dehydration synthesis or hydrolysis? Describe the glue after borax was added. What were the Independent and Dependent Variables?
