Introduction to Formal Hosting in English
by Hendi Pratama, MA.
2
The Concept of Host You’re not really the owner of the house.
But you represent the owner of the house.
3
Why do you want to join this workshop? Why do you want to be an MC?
You’d better have a reason
4
Why would being an MC or a Host make ME interested?
Balance of Life Life skill Income (used to be my main source of income) Opportunity to wear my “unused” outfit “The feel” of being a socialite
5
Formal vs Informal Shorter script Standard language Formal Dress
Rigid Protocol Less body movement Backsound /Dubber mode
6
Combination There’s always informal touch in formal occassion and There’s always formal touch in informal occassion
7
On the Event Make sure what kind of event is that?
Try to imagine if the event is yours, what do you want? Ask the users what they want? Ask for the “tentative” schedule? When and where the event will be held? Are you gonna be Solo or in Duet? Who will be the audience
8
On the audience Make sure you understand the nature of the audience (background, number, their dress, etc.) Try to research on the speakers. Spell out the name of the speakers carefully If you need a collaboration with audience, performers, users or speakers please communicate what you need (to them). Don’t be intimidated by your audience.
9
On your Dress Avoid daily outfit Stand out from the crowd
Make sure that nothing’s wrong with what you wear. Check your appearance on the mirror

On English Script (part 1)
You may translate or you may write it directly in English Schedule is not MC script Develop the script from the schedule and from “research” Proof read Make sure you know the meaning of all words Make sure you know how to pronounce all the words
15
On English Script (part 2)
Proof read again Check all the details (fix any changes) Rehearse the script (officially or not) Printout should be readable Make a cover or cue cards if needed On stage you may alter SERIOUS changes. Other than that, leave it.
16
Miscellaneous No right or wrong way to MC
Don’t freak out or over nervous Check the sound system or ask the sound man to do so. Saying sorry sometimes not necessary Humor if you think the timing is right (semi formal and informal occassion) Check out if you have a presentation slide to read.
