3 Workshop Outcomes By the end of this workshop I can:
Describe the role of lecture in instruction. Identify at least 10 activities that can be conducted in support of lecture-based instruction Select strategies to organize an ACTIVE discipline-appropriate lecture. Use IDEA feedback to consider ways to improve student learning during lectures.

4 Your Turn “Lecturing remains the staple of college teaching.” (Filene, 2005, p.48) Many have argued that it is an antiquated practice that does not help students learn. Quote from The Joy of Teaching – Peter Filene 2005

5 What is the role of a teacher?

6 What is the role of a lecture?
Summarize new material Pose thoughtful questions for investigation Demonstrate an expert’s way of analyzing subject matter Adapt information for students of varying levels of ability and prior knowledge

7 Advantages & Disadvantages
Control Cost effective and content efficiency Easy to revise Student acceptance Encourage student dependence on teacher No differentiation One-way communication Difficult to maintain student interest & attention

8 What’s your lecture like?
How do you plan your lecture? How do you organize your lecture?

9 Plan and Organize Material
Work backwards - consider what students should KNOW/DO at the conclusion of the lecture Plan lectures around 2 or 3 IDEAS Engage students from the beginning and try to end on a cliff–hanger.

10 Pose a question or vignette, Ask students to predict...
Strong Opening Pose a question or vignette, Ask students to predict... Lead with a quotation, Tell an anecdote, Show a photograph, Use some vivid material that crystallizes your issue or topic. (P. Filene, 2005) The Joy of Teaching

11 Consider one of your class periods
Your Turn Consider one of your class periods Pair with another faculty member to work/discuss Jot down 2 or three major themes for one of your lectures Develop a strong beginning OR a cliff- hanger ending for your lecture

12 What’s your lecture like? (Part 2)
What do you do in your lecture? What activities did you do? How many opportunities do students have to participate?

13 Active Lecture Activities
Consider creating more opportunities for students to participate Stop and check what students understand Chunk material in 10 minute blocks (STEPS) Plan an activity for every minutes of delivered content What role does READING have in your lecture?

14 Key-pers Plan content and steps based on objectives
Plan lecture around 2-3 topics Chunk lectures in 10 minute blocks Use lecture to clarify material; provide expert strategies; pose thoughtful questions, etc. Keepers are main ideas you want students to retain from a lecture. They can be interspersed in your lecture as an opportunity for students to reflect/ask questions or record more significant notes. You can precede the Keeper slide with the question – What essential items did you write down or do you need to remember from this segment?

15 Make Your Lecture Active

16 INCLUDE ONLINE RESOURCES
Adult Learning in Under 3 Minutes But have students connect its purpose to the lecture’s content and objectives!

17 What were the key-pers from the video?
Your Turn What were the key-pers from the video? Don’t tell – Ask! Let students teach each other 85% rule Find out what students know and teach the rest Allow students to create their knowledge Mix lecture and other activities (group work, videos, guest speakers, internet, books, etc.)

18 What’s your lecture like? (Part 3)
How do you end your lecture? How do your students know your lecture is over?

19 Conclusions are ACTIVE Endings
Plan for an active learning ending Reference beginning, objectives and purposes Reflect! Check for learning - muddiest points Generate interest for the next lecture!

20 What Have You Learned Today That You Can Use in Your Own Instruction?
Your Turn What Have You Learned Today That You Can Use in Your Own Instruction? Please write down: 1 Key-per 1 Muddiest Point 1 Reflection

21 ACTIVE LECTURE PLANNING
Your Turn ACTIVE LECTURE PLANNING Outline a plan for a 20 minute lecture for a 50 minute class period. Consider a stepped approach. Where do your students need to get to and each step to get them there… Use at least 2 activities from the handout

22 Course Evaluations Anonymous Ranked Objectives “Immediate” Results Comparative Data

23 How did we do? CAN YOU: Describe the role of lecture in instruction.
Identify at least 10 activities that can be conducted in support of lecture-based instruction Select strategies to organize an ACTIVE discipline- appropriate lecture. Use IDEA feedback to consider ways to improve student learning during lectures.

24 Next Steps… Thank you! Oct 11 – Teaching students who are challenging
Oct 19 – Google Forms to collaborate on integrating instructional strategies or reference workshop resources and ideas. Thank you!
