The 1960s The 1960s Probably one of the most eventful and tumultuous decades in our nation’s history 1) A time of great political activity and social change

The Warren Court 2) The Warren Court was one of the U.S.’s most influential Supreme Courts It was led by Chief Justice Earl Warren It made landmark decisions that would change our country 3) The Brown v. Board of Education (1954) decision was made by the Warren Court, integrating schools and helped the Civil Rights Movement 4) Another case would change our nation: Miranda v. Arizona (1966) Because of this landmark decision, accused persons must be informed of their rights when arrested

Kennedy Assassinated The innocence of the 1960s was shattered by tragedy November 22nd, 1963 1) President John F. Kennedy visits Dallas, Texas to begin campaigning for the 1964 election One part of his visit would be a small parade through downtown Dallas in an open-top limousine During the parade, Kennedy is fatally shot by a sniper who was hiding in a nearby building 2) Lee Harvey Oswald

Kennedy Assassinated Oswald was arrested hours later and denied any involvement in Kennedy’s death He himself was murdered while in custody 3) The impact of Kennedy’s assassination: Sympathy over Kennedy’s death led to more support for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Investigation into Kennedy’s murder came to the conclusion that Oswald acted alone However, many conspiracy theories exist from the CIA, to the mob, to Fidel Castro being involved…

President Johnson’s “Great Society”
For several days, the United States was in mournful shock over Kennedy’s death 1) Immediately after Kennedy’s assassination, the presidency went to his VP, Lyndon Baines Johnson 2) Johnson, was appalled at the poverty rate in the U.S., and launched a “War on Poverty” 3) He would then create a number of “New Deal”-like programs that Johnson called the Great Society Johnson finished Kennedy’s term and was elected in 1964.

With the Great Society, Johnson envisioned a United States without poverty He created a number of programs that are still in place today 4) A) Medicare – national health insurance for citizens over 65 B) Medicaid – healthcare for the needy These programs still benefit American citizens today

Martin Luther King, Jr. Assassinated
April 4th, 1968 1) Martin Luther King, Jr. was in Memphis, Tennessee to support black sanitary workers who were being discriminated against in their jobs King was staying at a hotel while in Memphis As he stood on the balcony of the hotel, he was fatally shot by a sniper 2) James Earl Ray was apprehended, convicted, and would die in prison for the murder of MLK

June 6th, 1968 The Presidential Election of 1968 is coming up 1) The late John F. Kennedy’s brother, Robert F. Kennedy is running for president He was in Los Angeles, and had just given a speech at the Ambassador Hotel celebrating his victory in the California primary election there 2) As he was exiting the hotel, a Palestinian Arab named Sirhan Sirhan runs up and shoots Kennedy in the head Kennedy dies 26 hours later

Sirhan’s motive was because of Kennedy’s support of Israel Sirhan was Arab 3) The impact of Robert Kennedy’s assassination: Many believed that there was no real leader left that could pull the U.S. out of its social turmoil

Kennedy’s assassination These spelled doom for the Democrats who had held the White House since 1960 4) At the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, 10,000 anti-war protesters showed up The protest turned violent when the Mayor of Chicago sent in the police to disperse the crowd

Nixon Returns 4) With the Democratic Party at its weakest, the Republican Party saw an opportunity to take the White House 5) Richard Nixon returns with another bid for the presidency and appeals to U.S. patriotism He promised a crackdown on the unruly violence that was rising in the 60s He also promised victory in the war in Vietnam Nixon would become the 37th U.S. President

Civil Rights We’ve already talked about the Civil Rights Movement in America But you need to know the two main organizations that pushed the movement forward 1) The SCLC – Southern Christian Leadership Conference formed by Martin Luther King, Jr. The SCLC was Christian based 2) The SNCC – Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee – another non-violent student movement

Women’s Movement 1) Women, though they won the full right to vote with the 19th amendment, were still fighting gender discrimination 2) In June of 1966, a group of women at a conference for women’s equality formed the National Organization for Women NOW NOW would advocate for women’s economic and social equality in the U.S.

Anti-War Movement 1) We’ve already talked about the anti-war movement that sprung up in the 60s The Vietnam War Young men being drafted Images of the war being seen on TV 2) The movement grew and caused social and political unrest until America’s withdraw from the war in 1975.

The United Farm Workers Movement
1) By the 1960s, 4 million Mexican-Americans lived in the United States They were the poorest and least educated people in the country They were also receiving low discriminatory wages at work 2) They would have a voice thanks to Cezar Chavez, founder of the National Farm Workers Association Chavez organized strikes, boycotts, and marches Negotiated better treatment for Hispanic-Americans

1) Marine Biologist Rachel Carson would change the country with her book Silent Spring Published in 1962 Warned America of how chemical pesticides are killing wildlife 2) Raised the country’s awareness of the importance of protecting the environment Silent Spring led to the passing of laws that monitored water and air quality in the U.S.
