Cycles of Matter **Matter is recycled within and between ecosystems
Chapter 3 Section 3-3 Cycles of Matter **Matter is recycled within and between ecosystems
2
Water cycle Evaporation and Transpiration change water from the liquid state to the gas state Precipitation – water vapor condenses and falls back to Earth.
3
Carbon Cycle 1. Photosynthesis and respiration take up and release carbon and oxygen 2. Erosion and volcanoes release CO2 3. Dead organisms are converted into fossil fuels (stores carbon) 4. Mining and burning fossil fuels releases CO2.
4
Nitrogen cycle Nitrogen is needed to make amino acids = proteins.
Nitrogen gas 78% of atmosphere Is found in waste and dead/decaying organic matter Nitrogen fixation – bacteria in plants convert nitrogen gas into useable nitrogen that can be used to make proteins.
5
The Phosphorus Cycle Important because it forms DNA and RNA. It is not common in the biosphere Found in rock and soil minerals and in ocean sediments.
