Warm up: Come up with TWO ways that you can relate Humanism from the Renaissance with your life today. Hint: look at the three main ideas from your notes on Humanism and think about what we talked about on Monday.

4 Where the Renaissance was born: Trading Cities in Italy
Many cities in Italy during the Renaissance were colorful and lively places. The twisty streets were crammed with tall narrow buildings with shops on the first floors and living quarters above. Large open plazas existed in many cities, where people could go to meet other people and admire the magnificent cathedrals and other public buildings.

5 Terms to Know City-state = a little state made up of a city and the surrounding countryside, both usually having the same name Milan Venice Florence

Florence Cathedral; Florence, Italy Topic: Trading City #1- Florence, known for: Banking (experts at placing the value of coins) Textiles (making fabrics) Uffizi Gallery; Florence, Italy

7 Trading City #2 – Milan, known for:
Metal goods, armor, buildings Competition with other city-states improved their products; accelerated the Renaissance The Duomo, a perfect example of Renaissance architecture in Milan

8 Trading City #3 – Venice, known for:
Rush Hour; Venice, Italy Marco Polo brought goods from Asia to Venice ports. Much wealth came from shipbuilding Grand Canal near Rialto Bridge; Venice Italy

9 How did they become Trading cities? Why were they important?
Needed to trade stuff to survive Needed/wanted to spread their knowledge and ideas Wanted to gain ideas from other cultures

10 How/Why did these 3 cities affect the spread of Renaissance ideas?
1) Great Locations 2) Got along with others 10) Richer than most other places 3) Trading ports included or close by 9) Good Medicine Italy 4) Paid their Ren. artists to create beautiful artwork 8) Strong ties with Byzantine and Muslim traders 6) Lots of ruins to study 5) Lots of Scholars 7) Florence spread bank branches all over Europe

11 Give 1, Get 1 Rules 1) Make 8 boxes on you paper
2) Fill in the first 2 boxes with your own ideas 3) Get up and find someone from another row. Share your info with one another. 4) Give one idea from your list so your partner can fill in a box. In return, Get one idea from your partner and fill in your next box. 5) Move on to a new partner and repeat steps 2 and 3 until all of your boxes are filled with different ideas. Rules 1) You can only trade 1 idea with any given partner 2) When you fill up all your boxes you have become a “Resource Person”…A Resource Person can give anyone as many ideas as he or she still needs.
