5
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE SWITCHGEAR
6
HORIZONTAL POSITIONING
Brush VSI switchgear is an example of transfer earth equipment in which a movable ‘carriage’ or ‘truck’ containing the oil Circuit Breaker and its associated operating mechanism move horizontally between NORMAL SERVICE, CIRCUIT EARTH and BUSBAR EARTH and vertically between ENGAGED and ISOLATED. This first illustration shows the Circuit Breaker carriage raised (ENGAGED) in the NORMAL SERVICE position
7
HORIZONTAL POSITIONING
Before the carriage can be moved horizontally, it must be lowered (manually ‘racked’ down with a handle) to the ISOLATED position. Interlocks prevent this operation unless the Circuit Breaker is OPEN
8
HORIZONTAL POSITIONING
The FEEDER EARTH position is achieved by pushing the carriage further into its housing, then racking it vertically upward. Again, this operation will only be possible if the Circuit Breaker is OPEN. Once the Circuit Breaker is fully raised, it is possible to CLOSE it and apply feeder (circuit) earth safely
9
FEEDER CIRCUIT BREAKER
This shows a typical unit. Protection relays are grouped on the upper panel, electrical controls and indications on the centre panel. The lower panel, hinged on its left hand side, covers the withdrawable Circuit Breaker on its carriage (truck)
10
CARRIAGE The carriage (truck) comprises the Circuit Breaker, operating mechanism, secondary plug contacts, isolation interlock and carriage interlock
11
CARRIAGE Note the mechanical status semaphore in the centre of the mechanism box
12
CARRIAGE POSITION SELECTOR
Precise positioning of the carriage between the three possible positions of NORMAL SERVICE, BUSBAR EARTH and CIRCUIT EARTH is obtained by moving a selector located on the right hand wall of the carriage housing. Selector movement should only be attempted with the carriage isolated and fully withdrawn
13
CARRIAGE POSITION SELECTOR
The three carriage positions are also marked on the housing floor – in this illustration the side wall has been omitted allowing the NORMAL SERVICE and BUSBAR EARTH positions to be seen. The rear CIRCUIT EARTH position is obscured
14
CARRIAGE The carriage bolt lock secures the carriage in the housing
15
CARRIAGE The isolation interlock prevents racking the Circuit Breaker vertically unless it is in the FREE position and this cannot be selected unless the Circuit Breaker is OPEN (OFF)
16
CARRIAGE The handle socket interlock prevents movement of the carriage interlock to the LOCKED position unless the racking handle is disengaged
17
CARRIAGE The handle socket interlock prevents movement of the carriage interlock to the LOCKED position unless the racking handle is disengaged
18
TRIP BUTTON A mechanical trip button and lockable cover is fitted to the front of the Circuit Breaker mechanism box. The cover will need to be locked when CIRCUIT EARTH is applied
19
ELECTRICAL OPERATION Circuit Breaker electrical TRIP and CLOSE is controlled by a rotary switch located at the lower centre of the middle panel. This control may be locked if required
20
MAIN CONTACTS AND SHUTTERS
The busbar and feeder isolating contacts with their associated safety shutters are located in the roof of the housing
21
MAIN CONTACTS AND SHUTTERS
Shutters are normally opened automatically as the Circuit Breaker carriage is raised to the ENGAGED position. However it is also possible to open them manually. This illustration shows the Feeder (circuit) shutters opened
22
MAIN CONTACTS AND SHUTTERS
It is also possible to lock either shutter closed. However it is critically important to remove the lock from any shutter that is to open automatically, before raising the Circuit Breaker carriage. Failure to observe this requirement will result in damage that is difficult to repair
23
TEST PRODS Test probes (prods) are available and should be used with this type of switchgear. Examine them before use to ensure they are in good condition with no loose components
24
TEST PRODS Test prods are used to make contact with the circuit conductors. Always insert and remove them wearing approved rubber gloves, under safe operational conditions and following the issue of a safety document
