4 Summary of Contributions from IS Section
PSB Finemet RF System 10 MHz Upgrade Increase Fast Feedback Gain in 40/80 MHz Systems Fast Ferrite Tuner for the 80 MHz cavities: Working Prototype, in progress Operational Device, waiting the outcomes of prototype testing PS Kicker System BE/RF-IS Contribution to LIU C. Rossi 31st May 2016

5 Main Specifications PSB Finemet® RF System
Beam intensity increase to 1.4∙1013 protons (present value is 1∙1013) ultimate goal 2.5∙1013; Energy increase to 2 GeV. Strategy Strategy Replace the C02, C04 and C16 systems with identical Finemet® cavities, 36 gaps per ring; Adopt solid state modular amplifiers; Upgrade controls and interlocks.

6 Main Specifications 10 MHz Upgrade
From 1.3∙1011 ppb to >2.0∙1011 ppb with 25 ns spacing with Linac4 C11 Standard amp Upgraded amp Reduction of the cavity impedance as seen by the beam by a factor 2 Increase the fast feedback gain of the Final amplifier in a uniform and reproducible way for the whole set of amplifiers. Strategy New Final amplifier components; Implement a modular architecture (to reduce repair time); New amplifier ancillaries (power supplies, RF driver amplifier, L-Bias control) required; New PLC-based interlock system.

7 Main Specifications 40/80 MHz RF Feedback Increase
Improve the beam longitudinal stability by reducing the cavity equivalent impedance. The present wide-band feedback is limited at 43 dB gain by the group delay between the feedback amplifiers and the cavity. Find options to reduce the cable length. Strategy Study the system stability with increased wide-band feedback, based on measurements of the present system; Estimate the feasibility and impact of the upgrade; Evaluate costs and benefits. 8 Main Specifications 80 MHz Fast Ferrite Tuner
Provide the possibility to operate the same 80 MHz cavity with p and ions in the same supercycle. p frequency is MHz and Pb frequency is MHz; A tuning range of 230 kHz is needed. Strategy S21 from simulated measurement ports Install a tuner prototype in the PS during EYETS 2016; Validate design and power consumption; Install 3 fast tuners during LS2.

9 Main Specifications Longitudinal kicker system
Dump coupled-bunch instability in multi-harmonic mode. Parameter Comment Frequency range 0.4…5.1 MHz RF voltage ~ 5 – 6 kV To be confirmed this year, all modes simultaneously Residual impedance as seen by the beam < 50 W at each frev line ~ half of impedance of a 10 MHz accelerating cavity Impedance reduction when not in use Gap relays 4 out of 6 gaps operational in 2015 and 5 out of 6 during the 2016 Run. Strategy Install a kicker prototype in the PS during LS1 to prove the principle; Develop and upgrade it until LS2.

13 LIU-PS Implementation Plan
10 MHz System Upgrade No major purchase expected Consolidation of HV power supplies (1971) Can be managed in the section with EPC support. Water cooling and power required in test stand at building 359 during part of LS2 Water cooling and power required in the PS as from January 202 80 MHz Fast Tuner Relevant test on one 80 MHz system during EYETS Some design required for the final RF feedthrough 6 months delivery expected for the ceramics of the RF feedthrough Solenoid delivery unknown, for the moment Rest of components can be off the shelf PS Kicker System Design a new shielding for the amplifiers Implement new solid state amplifiers (PSB design) Review the present cabling and patch panel 40/80 MHz Fast Feedback Upgrade The study must demonstrate the advantage of implementing this upgrade A new feedback architecture has to be defined New driving amplifiers, probably BE/RF-IS Contribution to LIU C. Rossi 31st May 2016

14 Implementation Plan Finemet Activities LIU-PS Activities

15 Status of Contributions from IS Section
PSB Finemet RF System One system tested (10 gaps) with all operational beams and all harmonics, IT being sent for all critical components 10 MHz Upgrade Prototype system tested with all operational beams 40/80 MHz Fast Feedback Upgrade Some preliminary measurements performed, no decision yet Fast Ferrite Tuner for the 80 MHz cavities Prototype device tested at low level on an 88 MHz cavity PS Kicker System Advanced prototype successfully tested with different beam conditions BE/RF-IS Contribution to LIU C. Rossi 31st May 2016

16 PLAN Overview The 40/80 MHz Feedback Upgrade is the only activity that has not been declared into PLAN, because of the uncertainty still pending on its feasibility. BE/RF-IS Contribution to LIU C. Rossi 31st May 2016

17 Conclusions The main IS contributions to LIU (PSB Finemet, 10 MHz Upgrade, PS Kicker) are well on their way. The feasibility of the 80 MHz Fast Tuner and of the 40/80 MHz Feedback Upgrade is still under investigation; costs and benefits will need to be considered as soon as the technical frame has been clarified. A correct implementation of the IS contribution requires the availability of the infrastructure and support at due time. PSB PS
