1
Big question: what are the best ways of interviewing witnesses and suspects?
2
Interviewing witnesses and suspects
Ethical interviewing
3
Ethical interviewing Police have historically made a distinction between interviewing (an attempt to obtain useful information from a witness) and interrogation (an attempt to induce a suspect to confess to a crime).
4
Police interrogation tactics (Inbau et al, 2013)
Widely used in US and elsewhere but NOT UK (or at least, shouldn’t be used due to PACE). Custody and isolation. Confrontation (accuse; block denials). Minimisation.
5
Comparison: interrogation v. ethical interviewing
Group: Use our routine for generating comparisons. Individual: Write a comparison between ‘interrogation’ and ‘ethical interviewing’.
6
Application and analysis
We are going to listen to a recorded police interview. Identify the ways in which the officer acts according to the ethical interviewing model.
7
Developing evaluation skills
Use the information from the studies to construct an evaluation of ethical interviewing. Remember: What CLAIM are you making? What REASONS & EVIDENCE are you offering? Is your evidence VALID? What ALTERNATIVE VIEWS are there?
8
Outside class Review what you have learned about interviewing witnesses and suspects. Check and update your notes on the topic. On Google Classroom - short questions about themes, issues and debates in Psychology.
