History Hold the Flag High By: Catherine Clinton Fine Arts
TSW create a visual aid to share with the class that represents the issues that led to the Civil War. VS.7 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the issues that divided our nation and led to the Civil War by a) identifying the events and differences between northern and southern states that divided Virginians and led to secession, war, and the creation of West Virginia… TSW get into groups of 5 and work together to construct a timeline of all the major events and changes that took place following the Civil War. TSW use markers and paper provided to illustrate their favorite part of the story. Then, TSW write a description of the scene on the back. (The teacher can bind them all together and put them in the class library for students to read later) VS.8 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the reconstruction of Virginia following the Civil War by b) identifying the effects of segregation and “Jim Crow” on life in Virginia for whites, African Americans, and American Indians; c) describing the importance of railroads, new industries, and the growth of cities to Virginia’s economic development. History TSW be given roles and participate in a Reader’s Theatre, acting out the events in the book as it is read. Hold the Flag High By: Catherine Clinton 4th grade level Fine Arts TSW design an array to represent a given multiplication problem, by drawing rows and columns of soldiers, and find the product. Math Language Arts TSW ask their parents, grandparents, or guardians to tell them about a brave act from their past or someone they know and write a descriptive story of what took place. English SOL 4.7 The student will write cohesively for a variety of purposes. a) Identify intended audience. b) Focus on one aspect of a topic. d) Organize writing to convey a central idea. e) Recognize different modes of writing have different patterns of organization. f) Write a clear topic sentence focusing on the main idea. g) Write two or more related paragraphs on the same topic. h) Use transition words for sentence variety. TSW write a journal entry about a time when they were really afraid, like Sergeant Carney.
