Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
The Outer Planets Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
2
Outer Planets There are 4 inner planets Also known as “Gas Giants”
Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Also known as “Gas Giants” they have so much mass compared to the terrestrial planets, great mass, creating a stronger gravity pull, forbids the gases from escaping , forming deep atmospheres of gases.
3
Characteristics of the Inner Planets
Their composition is similar to the Sun’s They are about 75% Hydrogen, 24% Helium, and 1% other combined elements None of the planets have a solid surface.
4
Jupiter The 5th Planet from the Sun
Origin of Name: was the supreme god in Roman mythology Size (in diameter): Largest Planet in the entire Solar System It’s diameter is 11 times bigger than the Earth’s Interesting Fact: Jupiter is almost 3 times as heavy as all the other planets in the Solar System combined.
5
Jupiter Length of Year: Average Temperature 234 degrees F Moons:
12 Days Average Temperature 234 degrees F Moons: ~17 Moons The moon called “10” is covered with volcanoes
6
Jupiter Composition: Hydrogen and Helium
Contains colorful bands of thick clouds The “Great Red Spot” A giant area on Jupiter, that consist of swirling clouds. The clouds form a swirl that appears to look as if it is a on-going hurricane.
7
Jupiter and Earth
8
Saturn Distance from the Sun: 6th Planet Origin of Name: Unknown
Size (in diameter): 2nd Largest in the Solar System Interesting Fact: Has beautiful rings that are visible from Earth. These rings are made up on chunks of rock and ice.
9
Saturn Length of Year: Average Temp: Composition: 29 Earth Days
288 degrees F Composition: primarily hydrogen and helium, but there is also ice of ammonia, ice of methane and water ice.
10
Saturn Interesting Facts:
Saturn has moons. It’s largest moon is called Titan. It is larger than the Earth’s moon. The only planet that is less dense than water. That means if we put Saturn in water, it would float!
11
Earth and Saturn Comparison
12
Uranus Distance from the Sun: Size (in diameter):
7th Planet Origin of Name: the name of the husband of Gaia and the father of the Titans in Greek mythology.) meaning "the heavens" Size (in diameter): 4 times the diameter of Earth
13
Uranus Is twice as far from the Sun than Saturn, making it extremely cold. Tilted about 90 degrees Rotates from top to bottom, instead of side to side. Orbit Period: 84 years= 1 Year on Earth
14
Uranus Composition: Mainly Hydrogen and Helium
Looks blue because of the traces of methane that is found in it’s atmosphere.
15
Earth vs Uranus
16
Neptune Distance from the Sun: 8th Planet from the Sun Origin of Name:
Neptune was the god of the sea Size (in diameter): 6,794 km Interesting Fact: Discovered by a mathematical prediction
