7 My current role …

8 Dementia Friendly Communities What it could mean for your organisation, group or society

9 The Four Cornerstones Looking at four key elements
as a way of understanding people’s place in their chosen community, their choices and life preferences, and considering the role of others in helping them continue to make a positive contribution

10 The Four Cornerstones - Place …
… clear, safe, accessible • built environment – internal spaces, lighting etc, signage and accessibility • identification with landmarks and ease of getting around • effect of mixed use/multi-purpose • transport (where applicable)

11 The Four Cornerstones - People …
…. at the heart of all we do immediate families and carers the wider community shared values and interests awareness and tolerance attitudes and behaviours effect of stigma employment/membership practices professionals and practitioners, becoming more community-focused outcomes-orientated empathetic and responsive to life style preferences

12 The Four Cornerstones - Resources …
… in the widest sense • not just about health and social care resources • wider commercial and business opportunities • harnessing technology • contributing to discussions and policy formulation in relation to community-wide investment

13 The Four Cornerstones - Networks …
effect on relationships, opportunities, service provision and people’s experiences importance of staying connected in clubs and organisations building on ‘champions’ models, peer support and Dementia Friends connecting various networks that support older people using the statutory agencies’ networks e.g. Health Engagement Networks, Healthwatch etc and local Dementia Action Alliances and older people’s forums

14 If you get it right … … for people with dementia, you get it right for everyone The prevalence of dementia in an increasingly ageing society poses challenges to the whole care sector and society as a whole, but … embraced positively and with the all agencies integrating and working collaboratively, the outcomes will be better care for individuals and more efficient use of skills and resources.
