WPBA v SLE – what can we learn?
Ian Ritchie President The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Chair AoMRC Assessment Committee
2
Introductions Who are you? What is your role / interest in WPBA?
What is the best / worst workplace assessment tool you’ve ever used? Maybe get some audience partici[pation by 3rd option, especiall if group is too big to go round and get names. Just ask people to tell you the best tool, write down any you’ve never heard of, then ask for the worst ones, you should get far more of those, make sure you share PBA as your favourite to show that here are actually tools to like
3
Where have we come from? Public confidence
Focus on providing evidence of competence Need to structure learning experience in order to record it
4
A recorded, structured learning experience
What do we need to achieve this? Structured experience(s) Effective assessment tools Recordable outcomes
5
1. Structured learning experience(s)
Learning environment Trainer skills & attitudes Trainee expectations
6
2. Effective assessment tools
Design Purpose Trust Training Governance Validity / sensitivity Reliability Practicability Sensitivity, sometimes a tool doesn’t record the experience because it lacks sufficient detail ie not sensitive to measure whats happening – just a thought
7
Recordable outcomes Good training practice needs:
a well structured learning event efficiently recorded effectively managed of tangible benefit to the trainee. Do SLE and WBPA deliver these outcomes?
8
SLE and WPBA What do we mean by these terms? Is there a difference?
What is the difference? A good wpba tool actually structures the event eg PBA but a bad wpba tool eg GOSLE either doesn’t structure the event at all ie becomes little more than a happy sheet or distracts from the learning by imposing an innappropriate level of beayrocracy eg most wpba because of the addition of endless extra questions that don’t help the learning.
9
Benefit to the trainee Formative Summative A single WPBA
A collection of WPBA
10
Outcomes Good training practice needs:
a well structured learning event efficiently recorded effectively managed of tangible benefit to the trainee. Do SLE and WBPA deliver these outcomes?

Discussion Good training practice needs:
a well structured learning event efficiently recorded effectively managed of tangible benefit to the trainee. Do SLE and WBPA deliver these outcomes? What are the factors that prevent or obstruct achieving these outcomes? Are the present WpBA capable of achieving these outcomes? Is it fair to consider WpBA as a whole group or should each tool be looked at on its merits? Is the problem inadequately designed assessment tools or insufficiently trained trainers? What steps need to be taken to improve the situation? Which step will deliver most benefit to training?
