Step 1: Read your list of ingredients. Make sure you have all of the items available before you start. You don’t want to get half-way through the recipe and find you are missing a key ingredient!

Step 2: Finish reading the whole recipe so you are aware of all of the steps involved. Pay attention to the time and equipment needed to complete the recipe.

Step 3: Make sure you understand the measuring terms. Check that you have the proper measuring tools that match the recipe and that you understand the measurements.

Step 4: Pre-heat your oven to the required temperature if you are cooking the food in the oven. This allows you to prepare the recipe while the oven warms up.

Step 5: Place all the ingredients on the counter in your reach. Get your measuring cups and spoons ready. Some steps in recipes must be performed quickly so you will want everything within easy reach.

Step 6: Follow the numbered steps in the recipe. Measure the dry ingredients with measuring spoons and cups. Level off the portions so that no ingredient overflows. You want to measure accurately or the recipe won’t work out. Use a liquid measuring cup for measuring liquids.

Step 7: Mix ingredients together according to recipe directions. Sometimes ingredients need to be mixed together before they can be added to the recipe. You often mix all dry ingredients together and set them aside. Then you measure all the liquid ingredients together. When you are done, you add the two combinations together in the main recipe.

Step 10: Serve the food! You might want to add a garnish to make the food appear more appealing.
