GFBio – Education module
Submit Lesson in Data Upload and Submission
2
Submit Ingest does not necessarily mean deposition in a data center or repository but rather moving data to a „curated“ environment – could be a specific folder on a shared drive somebody responsible for data management Juliane Steckel 29./ GFO Pre-Meeting Workshop DM GFBio

Submit Shared research domains are often project databases or databases of institutes that allow for changes after upload of your data. You do not get a persistent identifier like a DOI in a public domain that is permanently associated to your dataset. (see DOI later in the presentation and the Emodule ‘Publish’) Juliane Steckel 29./ GFO Pre-Meeting Workshop DM GFBio

Submit Submission does not imply open access.
Preserved and curated: Are data save where you submitted them (e.g. internal server)? From which devices are they accessible? Available, but with restriction: e.g. downloadable ‘on request’ Depends on: policy of the journal, where you submit your article options of the data center (embargo possible until your journal article is published and/or a post-publication-embargo?) Immediately available for reuse: downloadable, reusable and citable

10 minutes brainstorming
Your turn! Why submitting data to a shared domain at this stage? 10 minutes brainstorming Please write down your arguments on cards and arrange associated arguments next to each other! There are many reasons why you should consider submitting your research data to a shared domain at this stage. Take your time to write down the advantages of data submission within a shared domain.

Your turn! Why submitting data to a shared domain at this stage?
Intellectual property rights and licensing of my data are managed. Access to my data can be administered and usage monitored. My data are kept safe in a secure environment. My data are regularly backed up and preserved for future use. Visibility of my data can be enhanced , enabling more use and citation. I could eventually use fancy tools to analyse and visualize my data. I can get a persistent identifier. My data are discoverable by search engines and includable in online catalogues. I could integrate my data with other author’s data.

Submit Think about re-use Significant properties of your data
Are data most useful for future data users? Check data against spyware or malware. Assess the metadata (technical and descriptive): Description correct? Formats compatible? Evtl. provide a cleaning protocol. What you want people to be able to do with your data?
9
Submit Make your data discoverable: use keywords and ontologies!
Fulfil the achieve standards to make the data digestible. Choose a status for the availability of your data (immediately available, on request).
