Using Templates as a Coaching Tool for DBE Implementation

The purpose of this workshop is to present some tools that keep coaching conversations focused on content and pedagogy when leading teachers with varied beliefs and attitudes towards change. In line with this qoute these tools are designed to raise teacher awareness and responsibility towards implementing the DBE.

Purpose of Today’s Workshop
Part 1: A) To reflect on our coaching role(s) as we work with teachers who are in the process of implementing the new curriculum. B) To analyze tools that keep coaching conversations focused on content and pedagogy when working with teachers with varied beliefs and attitudes towards change. Part 2: A) To analyze various forms of information (from MEES, BIM, SOFAD) that can help us decide the order in which we should implement the new DBE courses.

Part 1 Instructional Coaching
Specify that there are many different types of coaching: i.e. life coach, motivational coaching, sports, money mastery etc. but that this workshop is regarding instructional coaching Instructional Coaching

Instructional coaching
“Instructional coaching is content based and intended to support teachers in meeting the aims of school or district based instructional reform” Reference: Gallucci, C., Van Lare, M. D., Yoon, I. H., & Boatright, B. (2010). Instructional coaching: Building theory about the role and organizational support for professional learning. American educational research journal, 47(4), Read deifintion and specify: We are specifically presenting tools or templates that will help teachers align their instruction with the curriculum. We feel that administrators can use these tools to establish a partnership with teachers in implementing change.

Activity 1: Think, Pair and Share (10-15min.)
Choose a partner Review the Roles of Instructional Coaches Specify what role(s) you most identify with as you partner with teachers in implementing the DBE curriculum. Indicate, with an example, how you display this coaching style Example: The role that I most identify with as a DBE implementation coach is ….. Because I (specify behavior indicator) …. The goal of this activity is to identify the various coaching styles that prove to be effective in education and to reflect on your own coaching style as you support teachers with the DBE implementation. A reminder that coaches will engage in different roles depending on the needs of the partnership.

Coaching Role Indicators
Curriculum or Content Facilitator: We assist the implementation process by: Designing hands-on, DBE provincial workshops according to DBE pedagogy, essential knowledge concepts, and DBE evaluation criteria. Transforming curriculum explanations into curriculum-aligned templates (Course Plans, Course Outlines, Lesson Plans, Curriculum Maps, exam exemplars, etc.) Professional Learning Facilitator: We design and facilitate professional learning opportunities via: Provincial and centre-level workshops Adult Learning Theory Teaching through Learning Situations Differentiated instruction Facilitator for Change: By creating opportunities that encourage teacher networking and instructional reflection: Provincial workshops Newsletter Special Projects (PLC groups, Ministry math project Teacher Videos (with RECIT) Resource: We provide teachers with resources via the DBE website, newsletter, and workshops Learner: We engage in continuous learning by reading research articles on effective PD, instructional design, building teacher networks, coaching maintaining contact with classroom teachers and discussing their thought and ideas working closely and obtaining information from MEES, Carrefour FGA, and RECIT Sonya will specify what the indicators are

It sounds great in theory, but…..
In all aspects of life, we will find that ideas and theories sound great on paper. But, then our challenge becomes how realistic is applying this to “real life” situations? Instructional coaching in practice

Coaching teachers through DBE implementation:
The goal of this next activity is to share current coaching strategies with DBE implementation conversations. A reminder that the dialogue starters that have been prepared are real life examples that have been raised during provincial workshops. Where are we now?

Activity 2: Role play (10 min.)
In groups of 3, choose 1 instructional coaching situation provided on the index card (5 min) Identify a director/coordinator/pedagogical consultant, a teacher, and an observer (2 min) Role play the situation as realistically as possible (5 min) Discuss feedback from observer (5 min)
