3 Perfect Site – Why? Good views from the hill.
Good aspect, hill for shelter. Rock for building materials Trees for building materials and fuel. Flat land for farming. River water for cooking, drinking and washing.

4 How is land used in cities?
Learning Objectives: To identify different land uses using OS maps To interpret living and working conditions in city areas using OS maps

5 Look at road layout – straight (linear, grid iron pattern) or wide crescent shapes and cul de sacs?
What is the land used for? Factories? Housing? Leisure? Shops? Public buildings? Open space? Compare the sizes and density of the buildings – are there many or few buildings in an area? How are buildings arranged? Attached to each other? Separated? Any gardens, open space?

6 Your task: to identify how land is used in different areas of Southampton.
There are 6 squares to investigate – your group is going to focus on one grid square and present your findings to the whole class SU 4117 SU 4014 SU 4211 SU 4312 SU 3815 SU 4214

7 An example!

8 How much of the land is given to:
Transport? Housing? Public buildings? Open space? Factories? Shops etc Estimate the percentages for your grid square. If there is housing, what type is it? Terraced? Semi detached? Flats? Large detached housing? How can you tell? What is the evidence from the map? How accessible is this area to the rest of Southampton? Main roads, rail? How expensive do you think the land will be? Why?
