Work based learning - Apprenticeships

6. What are MY Choices? A/AS Levels
- Level 3 – must have GCSEs A*- C (4/5 – 9) to do (some places ask for A/B)
6th forms and 6th form colleges specialise, but can also do at college
Work in a way similar to school, traditional learning style suited to academic learners (most of the older generation understand these and think they are ‘better’ – this is a myth!)
Usually choose 3 subjects – some education providers will allow 4
A levels are now separated from AS levels – meaning you would study an AS level course but this would not count towards the full A level
Good if wanting to keep options open, if like a more academic way of working, or if want to do a particularly academic job which requires years of academic study in the future such as a lawyer or doctor.
Encourage to study a range that bring out transferable skills as there are no employability skills in A levels

7. What are MY Choices? BTECs or Technical Qualifications
Level 3 equal in points to 3 A levels (tariff points are considered when you go to university)
Can be in some 6th forms but mainly at colleges specialising in vocational area
First year is subsidiary diploma, second year is extended diploma. Some 6th forms may offer a BTEC subsidiary diploma over 2 years – this will be equal to one A level.
Coursework-based but more exams are being introduced – getting harder!
Good if you prefer a more practical way of working and know what area you want to work in (but will allow you to explore different areas within)

8. What are MY Choices? Apprenticeships
It is NOT the easy answer for low achievers!
Gain NVQ qualifications whilst working in the job you want – same conditions apply in employment i.e. holiday pay, start times etc.
Good if you enjoy a practical way of working, know exactly what you want to do and feel confident to start work now (some employees i.e. Business would allow you to work in different departments to explore different areas)
Possible to do Advanced Apprenticeships (level 3, 4 and 5) but more difficult to get and higher expectations
May start on level 2, even if you have A*-C GCSE as it’s important for an employer to gap fill employability skills
