Tennessee Breastfeeding Promotion and Support Strategic Map: 2016-2018
03/07/2017 Increase breastfeeding initiation, duration, and exclusivity and improve health in Tennessee Convene the Tennessee Breastfeeding Steering Committee Engage and educate communities Provide education and support to healthcare providers Support development of/ access to lactation support Develop committees to work specific issues Standardized BF fact sheet for prenatal use Promote state and federal laws regarding breastfeeding Standardized education for providers to increase confidence Access/coverage for IBCLC services for all moms How about a state coordinator? Create multilingual resources Develop policy briefs to share relevant breastfeeding information with policymakers Encourage all RNs/OBs/Peds to take the 20 hr breastfeeding course Peer counselor and IBCLC in every health department Identify funding/grants for BF projects Public education (PSA, billboards, schools) Create recognition for hospitals, workplaces, other sites to recognize breastfeeding promotion/support Focus on consistent messaging and training of all health professionals Telemedicine Quarterly meetings for the group Involve Others: Churches Father/male Involve community members to promote the “BF Welcome Here” campaign Meet with Peds/OBs every 2 months to review new evidence (teach, support, etc) Offer financial support to incentivize more IBCLCs List of organizations involved and contact persons Enhance media/social media efforts to normalize breastfeeding Engage workplaces in supporting breastfeeding mothers Increase access and utilization of prenatal education Home visiting services with IBCLC option/funding Regular communication re: benchmarks, successes, progress re: all stakeholders involved Raise awareness of community resources for BF support for moms Create recognition for hospitals, workplaces, other sites to recognize breastfeeding promotion/support Work with local coalitions to assist with plan to mentor future CLC/IBCLCs Coordinate and align with statewide efforts Support hospitals to move towards Baby-Friendly designation Systems change for hospital discharge and follow-up Listserv to bounce off ideas Understand and address provider “push back” Discuss impact of IBCLC licensure in TN—participate in process Buy-in from stakeholders across many areas Collect, Evaluate and Visualize Breastfeeding Data Ask: “Who is Missing”? Ask: “Why”? Listen Develop outcome measures to track progress Create breastfeeding data repository (identify data sources) Prepare state map of IBCLCs and CLCs Increase diversity of this group Work collaboratively and celebrate success Localize solutions Communicate effectively (to group & broader audience) Engage others/be inclusive Take action/empower others to act Deliberately address disparities
