Computer Maintenance Tips
#1 Have an updated Anti-Virus installed on your computer #2 Install and run an Anti-Spyware program #3 Perform a disk clean-up removing cookies and downloads #4 Perform a disk defragment #5 Update
3
ANTI-VIRUS Your internet provider will provide free anti-virus, but you need to contact them, download the anti-virus and install it. You can use a free anti-virus program (AVG has a free version that works fine) You can purchase an anti-virus program from Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Sam’s, etc.
4
ANTI-SPYWARE Download free versions from the internet. Be careful to download the free version. (I like Superantispyware. Our county tech department likes Malwarebytes) When you download anything, you have to be careful that you are downloading the program you want – advertisers are always trying to get you to download more products – don’t fall for their SPAM! If you are not sure, ask for help…or watch and follow a youtube how-to video. You can always buy and run a purchased version from department stores or technology businesses. Check for updates and run the anti-spyware monthly.
5
Disk Clean-Up You can do this many different ways, but the most direct way is to: Open Explorer Right Click on “Local Disk (C:)” Click on Properties Click Disk Clean Up Wait while it pulls up the items that could be eliminated I would check temporary files and recycle bin Click OK Click OK again when it asks if you’re sure
6
Disk Defragment Same steps as Disk Cleanup but click on the TOOLS TAB after you click properties. Click Defragment Now (this takes longer than the disk clean-up) Click OK This is also the place to check the hard drive for errors You can also back up files here
7
UPDATE In Search, type “settings” Click on “all settings”
Click on “Update and Security” A window will pop up showing the status of items available You can click on the update listed and install it. You can also look this up through google or youtube or follow the link windows-update-security-settings- windows-10
8
INTERNET BROWSER Be sure to clear your cookies and browsing history periodically to keep your device running more smoothly. Some sites require you turn off the pop-up blocker. Many websites require Flash Player and Adobe Reader to work correctly. Apple iPad does NOT run adobe, that’s why you have to download the app in order to use many programs.
