1 Changing words for style or clarity.
Rhetorical Questions Changing words for style or clarity.

2 Transition Questions But (contradiction): however, quite the contrary, despite, on the other hand, although, yet, nevertheless Therefore (cause and effect): hence, and so, thus, consequently, for example, because of, finally, in conclusion Also (in addition): in addition, for example, furthermore, another

3 How to Spot a Transition Question
The underline portion in a transition question is almost always at the beginning of a new clause, sentence, or paragraph.

4 Example Funds provided by the Stafford program are not considered scholarships; so too, they are part of the extended student loan system. A. NO Change B. in addition, C. rather, D. moreover

5 Crack it! The underline portion is at the beginning of a new clause….transition! “so too” is an also. Is that what is needed? NO. The next clause is not an additional thought but rather a contrary thought. The answer is C.

6 Redundancy Cheap and inexpensive gifts can be found in the shopping district. Cheap and inexpensive state the same idea. Omit the underline portion. Weak and without strength, the old car could not make it up the hill. Weak and without strength state the same idea. Omit the underlined portion.

7 More difficult After birth, the newborn babies are weighed by a nurse.
After birth and newborn….same thing.

8 Ordering Paragraphs This type of question is always after all specific questions at the end. Do NOT spend large amounts of time re-reading the passage. Eliminate wrong answer choices and guess.

9 Crack It! Look at the first and last paragraph to determine the order of the passages. Try to observe any connection between two paragraphs in the passage. Is there a cause and effect happening?????

10 Example [1] He recommended an excellent specialist to perform the surgery. [2] When the day came, I drove to the hospital, dreading the moment I’d need to leave her behind. [3] While we waited for her to be admitted, Wheezie sensed something was wrong and curled on my lap, trembling. [4] My vet broke the bad news that Wheezie would have to have surgery to correct the problems in her nasal passage and vocal chords. 8. Which of the following order of sentences will make the paragraph most logical? F. No Change G. 2,3,1,4 H. 4,3,2,1 J. 4,1,2,3

11 Here’s How to Crack It The surgery isn’t properly introduced until the end, which means sentence 4 should be the introduction. So, eliminate (F) and (G) and determine if sentence 3 or 1 should be next. Sentence 1 makes more sense, and the correct choice is (J).
