Use of the term Spatial data vs GIS
Spatial data
● Spatial data are data that have a spatial component i.e data that are connected to a place on the Earth.
● Also referred to as Geospatial data or geographic information.
● It is the data or information that identifies the geographic location of features and boundaries on Earth, such as natural or constructed features, oceans, etc.

Geographic Information System
A Geographic Information System integrates hardware, software, data, and people to capture, manipulate, analyze and display all forms of spatial data.
● Although the use of GIS in AIM can be considered a “mature practice” globalization of procedures and practices to include software, hardware and people is not feasible. Such details qualifies as guidance hence suitable for Doc 8126 and Chart Manual.

Use of the term Spatial Reference System(SRS)
● The Commonly mistaken for Coordinate reference system(CRS), Spatial reference systems provide a framework to define positions on the Earth‘s surface.
Comprises of five components;
-Geoid,
-Ellipsoids,
-Datum,
-Coordinate reference system and
-Projection
● Draft PANS-AIM includes the first four due to their role in data collection. Projection is not applicable in data collection hence good material for the chart manual.
