Ministry of Parks, Culture & Sport
So – about 6 years ago, a number of leaders and friends from different sectors and organizations came together for cinnamon buns and a good chat about physical literacy, children and potential collaborations in Saskatchewan. We were quick to recognize the excellent and important work happening within each of our sectors. The purpose of coming together was to share and identify one or two unique opportunities that would only be successful if we did them together. Physical Literacy is about moving from…
‘Plan as you go’ and ‘do it because we always do it this way’ type programming…. Not just playing duck duck goose and camouflage all summer…! … well designed, intentional programming, with skill development that uses the appropriate equipment, provides the right level of challenge, and fully engages participants so that they all have FUN and leave feeling like a rock star at the end of the activity, regardless of their skill or ability.

It takes a village … … and a country!

Gaining momentum: Across the Nation …
q Canadian Sport Policy Physical and Health Education Canada Framework for Recreation in Canada Canadian Sport for Life Let’s Get Moving: Physical Activity Vision Physical Literacy is gaining serious traction across Canada! National Policy Statements focused on Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity identify Physical Literacy as “Foundational” piece to build a healthier, active, successful nation. National organizations like PHE Canada and Canadian Sport for Life recognize Physical Literacy as a ‘core’ purpose within their respective mandates.

Gaining momentum: In Saskatchewan…
q Saskatchewan in motion SK Physical Education Curricula Healthy Start High Five Community Leaders Sask Sport Strategic Plan We believe that Saskatchrewan people generally want the same thing….happy, healthy, successful children and youth. The Partners for Physical Literacy recognize that we will all work toward that goal from a different angle, with slightly different outcomes. Our collective work is rooted in strong national or provincial policy that influences the way we work. But no matter where we come from, what language we use, what approaches we deliver – it is what is at the centre of our work that matters.
