1 Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. Habitats

2 Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. Success Criteria: * I can label animals characteristics * I can describe the conditions the animal lives in * I can list any adaptions the animal has

3 Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. What is a habitat ?

4 A habitat is the place where living things live.
Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. A habitat is the place where living things live. It is more than just a home it includes the whole surrounding area. The habitat provides the animal or plant with food or shelter.

5 People and their habitats
Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. People and their habitats People can live all over the world.

6 Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. We can do this because we are able to build homes for different conditions.

7 Also we can change our clothes to best suit the temperature around us.
Animal skin and fur act as insulators and keep heat in. White clothes reflect the heat

8 Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. Animals and plants Most plants and animals are specially adapted to survive in a particular habitat. They have developed special features to suit the demands of their environment. This is called adaption.

9 Some examples of adaption
Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. Some examples of adaption

10 All birds have similar characteristics.
Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. Long legs are good for wading All birds have similar characteristics. But many water birds have features that are different from those birds live on land. These wings act as flippers Webbed feet for swimming

11 Some animals are camouflaged to blend in with their surroundings.
This keeps them safe as it is more difficult for other animals to see them or catch them for food. This lion blends in well with the grassy background. These zebra could easily be mistaken for bushes from a distance. This lizards skin is so similar to the rock colour.

12 Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. Aquatic animals have streamlined bodies to move more easliy in the water.

13 These animals have adapted to live in the hot climate of the desert.
Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. These animals have adapted to live in the hot climate of the desert. Camels store water in their humps. Ostriches have long eyelashes to keep out the sand. Snakes glide across the hot sands and can shed their skin

14 These animals have adapted to be more suited to cold temperatures.
Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. These animals have adapted to be more suited to cold temperatures. Layers of fat keep the seals body warm, and small ears stop heat loss. Polar bears are kept warm by their body fat. Deers have a warm layer of fur.

15 Even plants have adapted to their habitats.
Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. Even plants have adapted to their habitats. The cactus has fleshy stems that store water. Dandelions seeds are easily dispersed. The water provides support for this lily as it has less developed roots to hold it in place.

16 Animals and plants help each other
Learning Objective: I can understand how the location of hot and cold countries affects the different animals that live there. Animals and plants help each other Protection Plants and animals depend on each other for a wide variety of things. Nests to reproduce Shelter Food Gas exchange

17 Task Time! ***: Independently select an animal that lives in particular environment/habitat. Draw or have pictures for to glue into book. Write features of animal and identify which habitat they live in. **: (TA) With support, select an animal that lives in particular environment/habitat. Draw or have pictures to glue into book. Label and write features of animal and identify which habitat they live in. *: (CT) As a group, select an animal. Discuss different features of animal and label animal. Photocopy work and place into books

18 Task Time! I’m thinking of an animal –listen to my clues to what animal I might be thinking of….. This animal lives in the ocean. It has a streamline body so it can swim easily and quickly through the water. What animal am I?
