2. Acid Piranha Solution
Traditionally a 3:1 solution of sulfuric acid to 30% hydrogen peroxide (v:v)
Glassware must be cleaned and dried prior to use!
Highly exothermic
Acid piranha will melt plastics, and the oxidative reaction is accelerated by water, acid, and base
Do not generate excess piranha or cap your solutions!
Only use in a well ventilated hood
Slowly add peroxide to acid directly in the glassware to avoid uncontrolled reactions
Piranha MUST be neutralized
or manifested separately due to
reactivity with organic molecules.
