2 The Revolution Begins Lesson 1
The Anglo colonists sent a petition to the Mexican government. This is a signed request for action. The colonists wanted new settlers to come to Texas.

3 The Battle of Gonzales In 1835, Mexican soldiers were sent to Texas to take back a cannon. The Texans would not let them take the cannon. This started a battle and became the first battle of the Texas Revolution.

4 Independence Declared Lesson 2
In 1836, Texas delegates met at a convention to declare that Texas would split from Mexico.

5 The Fight for Independence Lesson 3
Santa Anna planned to attack the Alamo. He sent in a cavalry. This is a unit of soldiers on horseback.

6 The Alamo The Texans were defeated at the Alamo. The Mexican soldiers turned the Texan’s cannons on the Texans. This ended the battle.

7 The Runaway Scrape After Texans heard about Santa Anna’s victory at the Alamo, Texans quickly moved away from the Mexican army.

8 The Goliad Massacre On March 14, 1836, Texan soldiers were captured in Goliad. Santa Anna ordered these Texans to be killed because they fought Mexico.

9 Independence Won Lesson 4
Sam Houston led the Texans into victory at the Battle of San Jacinto. A few Mexican soldiers escaped, including Santa Anna. He dressed as a Mexican soldier, but was found by the Texans

10 The Treaties of Velasco
On May 14, 1836, two treaties were signed. They became known as the Treaties of Velasco. It described what would happen after the war ended.

11 The New Texas President
Sam Houston was elected as the first president of the Republic of Texas.
