Abandoned wells can be used as structures to recharge.
A recharge pit can be built to recharge a well.
The depth may be from 6 to 8 feet and the dia of the pit
may be from 0.5 m to 3.0 m.

3. PROBLEMS/ ISSUES THAT NECESSITATED THE INITIATIVES
Open wells and tube wells constitute 55.7% of Tamil Nadu’s
irrigation.
Average drop in ground water across Tamil Nadu was
0.34 m/year in the past 5 years, which ranks among one of the
most rapid drop in the world.
A decline of 1.2% was observed in the area under irrigation
through wells during
Out of 385 blocks, 142 blocks are classified as over exploited,
33 as critical and 57 as semi critical.

4. Outcome of the Innovative practices
Augments the ground water resources.
Stores the surplus surface water particularly during the flood periods for future use and reduce the flood peaks.
Retards the surface runoff and penetrate the overlying impervious strata.
Recharges the aquifers.
Improves the quality of ground water.

EFFORTS TAKEN FOR UPSCALING/REPLICATION AT OTHER SITES – EXPERIENCE SHARING
Rejuvenation of abandoned well executed in selected
watersheds during
Water table increased upto 2 to 3 feet.
Action initiated to execute in all watersheds.
1149 Nos of abandoned wells are proposed to be
rejuvenated before March 2016 in Batch – I and II projects.
An additional area of 4500 to 5000 Ha. can be brought
under cultivation.

6. LEARNING REGARDING PROCESS RESTRUCTURING/ REORGANIZATION
In the ongoing projects recharge of abandoned wells will be
made mandatory.
