GIS Jobs. And stuff.
2
Skillz Check out the Geospatial technology Competency Model at models/geospatial-technology.aspx Check out the poster in the GIS lab. Courses Internships projects
3
Scrub your internet presence
Yeah. You will be googled. Make sure anything that will hinder a job search is gone from the interwebz. Use multiple search engines. Clean up facebook, etc. Some places require access (which I think is BS, but…..)
4
Your Resume 2 pages max. Include references unless provided some other way. Go over what to put on it. cover-letter-and-resume-stand-out/212040 resume/
5
Your Cover Letter Google current standards in a cover letter.
1 page, max for entryish jobs. SELL yourself – for the specific job.
6
FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS
As in… be totally retentive. If they say use a certain font, use it. Page limits, do it. Seriously, your app will be tossed immediately if you don’t do things the way they want them. Especially if there is a HR department that is filtering.
7
The interview….. Dress sharp, brush teeth, yada, yada
Be unfailingly polite. Know as much as you can about the job and company Prepare answers to question (ie. why do you want to work here?) Have questions ready to go. About the company, work, etc. But not about salary/benefits…. Those questions come later.
8
Finding jobs Nancy’s list. Federal jobs: Then goto the individual pages for any company or agency.
9
More. http://www.mygisjobs.com/ http://www.geographyjobs.com/index.php
And never forget your old pal, Google.
10
Network Conferences (WAURISA is the top one in WA/OR)
Volunteer (internships, etc) Wander around and ask (smart) questions. Connect with people you know Linked in Listservs, etc – answer questions. Get involved. Don’t piss people off. This includes not only people that might hire you, but fellow students, faculty, etc. Job searches are not linear, and you will do many searches in the future.
11
Final tips…. Have someone edit your resume and cover letter. Both people in GIS and someone without a clue. A good idea would be one of your profs…. Just sayin’
