3 The Era of Good Feelings

4 James Monroe 5th president Democratic-Republican
Presidency known as “the era of Good feelings” Why? A strong sense of nationalism rises after the war of 1812, USA will focus on strengthen their nation

5 Economic Nationalism

6 American System Henry Clay
plan to strengthen and unify the nation 3 parts: Tariffs, Banks and internal improvements Henry Clay

7 1. Tariff of 1816 Why? GB goods were cheaper than American goods so the colonists were buying them. Must protect NORTHERN industries Protective tariff caused all GB prices to increase by 25%

8 2. Est. 2nd National Bank Why? Benefit:
1st contract ended 1811 so states began printing their own $$$$$$$$ Caused uncertainty in value of money Prices soared after war of 1812 Cause Panic of 1819 Benefit: A national bank would provide federal gov’t control over the nation’s money supply and banking practices which promotes UNITY!!!

10 3. Internal Improvements
Improve nation’s transportation system Want the fed. gov’t to build new roads & canals to link the Midwest to the East Coast Use the tariff of 1816 money.

11 Examples of Judicial Nationalism
Fletcher vs. Peck 1809 In 1795, the Georgia state legislature passed a land grant awarding territory to four companies. The following year, however, the legislature voided the law and declared all rights and claims under it to be invalid. In 1800, John Peck acquired land that was part of the original legislative grant. He then sold the land to Robert Fletcher three years later, claiming that past sales of the land had been legitimate. Fletcher argued that since the original sale of the land had been declared invalid, Peck had no legal right to sell the land and thus committed a breach of contract. Outcome 1st time a state law ruled unconstitutional Hinted that Native Americans did not hold title to their own lands

12 2. McCulloch vs. Maryland 1819 Story: Maryland tried to tax the 2nd national bank of USA, its was on their land Outcome: S.C. ruled that fed. gov’t could create a national bank (cuz implied powers/necessary & proper clause) S.C. ruled that fed. gov’t was supreme

13 3. Gibbons vs. Ogden story: NY tried to have a monopoly over steamboat traffic from the Hudson River to NJ. NY gave Ogden his license but Gibbons received his from the Fed. gov’t. NY tried to revoke gibbons license. Outcome: Granted fed. gov’t the right to regulate interstate commerce (trade b/w states)

14 All these cases strengthened the power of the federal gov’t over the states

15 Examples of Foreign Nationalism
1. Florida added to the USA Signed Adams-Onis treaty 1819 Gave Florida to USA and defined the Louisiana territory boundaries

16

17 2. Monroe Doctrine Spain lost many colonies throughout the years and wanted to gain some back Russia claiming territory in USA from Alaska to Oregon territory PRES. MONROE SAID ENOUGH!!!! “there will be no more colonization in the Western Hemisphere by any European powers” known as Monroe doctrine
