Characteristics of effective learning: Playing and exploring
Active learning Creating and thinking critically “These characteristics underpin learning and development across all areas and support the child to remain an effective and motivated learner.” (Development Matters in the EYFS : 4)

Learning Behaviours Whole school initiative
Learning Behaviours are the crucial link between the way in which children learn and their social knowledge and behaviour. They are about ‘how’, and not ‘what’, the children learn. Each behaviour is represented by a character or ‘Learning Friend’. ‘Learning Behaviour’ displays can be found in classrooms and in the school foyer.

Learning Behaviours Our aim is for the children to develop an understanding of how they learn and to be able to identify which attributes they already demonstrate and others they may need to develop. We therefore ensure that the children understand what is expected for each of these learning behaviours (their attributes). Children are encouraged to talk about and reflect on their own learning and staff are consistent with the language we use.
8
Learning Behaviours Opportunities are provided for the children to develop and practise these behaviours, through well designed activities across the whole curriculum i.e. carefully chosen stories, circle times, small group activities, assemblies. We celebrate success through:- - Verbal feedback Certificates Displays – including photos and child voice Stickers Sharing with parents
