Psychology The study of behavior and mental processes.
Behavior is any action that can be observed and measured. All activities are behaviors.

Cognitive activities Are mental processes. These activities include: dreams, perceptions, thoughts, and memories. Psychological constructs are used to talk about something we cannot see, touch, or measure directly. Intelligence, dreams, perceptions

Goals of Psychology Observe Describe Explain Predict Control
Behavior and mental processes.

Theory A statement that attempts to explain why things are the way they are and happen the way they do. Examples: Evolution, Big Bang,

Principle A rule or a law.
Example: If you study more, your grades will be better. If you exercise, you will be in better shape.

Who does what? Psychologist: studies patients, tests disorders, talks and counsels Psychiatrist : works inside a branch of medicine dealing with psychological disorders Provides medical (drug) treatment

Developmental Study the changes that occur throughout a person’s life span.
