Increasing number of factory jobs available The ‘American Dream’ Freedom of thought and expression Economic opportunities

Where They Settled Similar ethnic backgrounds moved to similar neighborhoods Little Italy, Chinatown, etc. European immigrants mostly in East & Midwest Many European Immigrants wind up working in factories or try to move West to own & work the land Asian immigrants mostly in West Many Chinese immigrants ended up working for the railroads

Positive Affects Melting Pot – place where cultures blend
Assimilation – blending into society by learning English and how to be American citizens Bits and pieces of culture worked their way into American culture

Negative Affects Prejudice against immigrants
They would take any job and work for long hours and low wages Worked in sweatshops: hot, crowded, dangerous factories- for about $10/week Americans worried there would not be enough jobs

Negative affects cont. Chinese Exclusion Act (1882)
Banned Chinese immigration for 10 years Concentration of people in cities increased danger of disaster People lived in tenements: overcrowded and run down apartment houses How the Other Half Lives – by reformer & activist Jonathan Riis (We will watch this shortly)

Political Machines Groups emerged that would control and influence government thru illegal means Bribery Extortion Threats Bosses of these groups would give to receive voter support Cash Jobs Food
