February Days Effects The angry crowds took over, blocking the streets of Paris. Demonstrators clashed with troops; men and women were killed while singing the revolutionary song “La Marseillaise.” Causes The government prevented public meetings and silenced people by killing them or putting them in jail.

June Days Causes Upper and middle class had won control over the government. National workshops were shut down Effects Workers were furious and cried “bread or lead” which meant you give them food or bullets for war. Peasants protested and rebelled against the government.

Louis Napoleon By 1848 the National Assembly issued a constitution for the Second Republic. It created a strong president and a one-house legislature. Nine million Frenchmen now could vote and when elections for president were held, the overwhelming winner was Louis Napoleon. He was elected president because he was liked by the rich and poor. He was the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. Wrong and Right (W/R) He proclaimed himself emperor, taking the title Napoleon III and ending the short-lived Second Republic. (R) Many people thought that a monarchy was more stable than a republic. Millions of French hoped that Napoleon would restore the glory days of Napoleon Bonaparte. (W) Napoleon III would embark on foreign adventures that would bring down his empire and end French leadership in Europe.
