Presentation on theme: "Active and Passive Voice"— Presentation transcript:

1 Active and Passive Voice

2 Active Voice The subject of the sentence is doing the action.
Example: Steve loves Amy. (Steve is the subject of the sentence he is the one doing the action. Amy is the object of the sentence.)

3 Passive Voice the target of the sentence is moved to the subject position. However, the subject is not doing the action. Example: Amy is loved by Steve. (Amy is the subject of the sentence, but she isn’t doing anything. The object of the sentence, Steve, is still doing the action.)

4 Helpful hint If there is no object in the sentence, but the subject is not doing the action, add the phrase “by zombies” to the end of the sentence. If the zombies are the one doing the action, the sentence is passive. Example Amy is loved. To check the sentence, add “by zombies.” Amy is loved (by zombies). Is Amy doing the work or the zombies? If Amy is doing the work, the sentence is active. BUT 4. If the zombies are doing the work, the sentence is passive.
