A Question of Law
4
Positioning & Movement
5
Aim To consider how we can improve our positioning and movement without invading player space To review our positioning during fluid play situations
6
A Coaches View Need to aware of invading players space
Teams practice their attacking playing situations Let the play to develop in front of you rather than gaining closer proximity to the ball in these areas Firstly to avoid being hit by the ball Secondly, to stop play develop around the referee (referees turning 360°)

Invading player’s space during fluid play

A Manager’s View "The most important thing is tactics, the movement of your players once the ball starts rolling" Rafael Benitez
9
Referee Coaches View The more sophisticated the tactics become the less time and space are available Anytime that the referee is in front of the ball, he may be using space that the players could use Stan Lover in his book “Soccer Match Control” (Pelham Books, 1978, revised 1986), p. 179 says that “Total football demands total refereeing , that is, control of all phases of the play over the whole field.” As a result, teams playing at a high level of tactical skill will require highly sophisticated match control. The key to tactical play is effective use of space and time. The same can be said for the key to effective refereeing. Again, according to Lover: “The more sophisticated the tactics become the less time and space are available. The message for match officials is the same. For effective control, tactics must be assessed more quickly.”
10
Change position relative to the ball
Possible Solutions Change position relative to the ball (a) by waiting for the player in possession to move ahead by actively seeking a position behind the ball Widening your patrol path? An example is shown in the next slide.
11
Positioning & Movement
In Pairs, please record your discussions on the following two questions? What is the best position? How do we achieve the optimal position?
12
Positioning & Movement
What is the best position? One that is flexible and intelligent How do we achieve the optimal position? Through tactical awareness and common sense
13
Tactical Thinking - Fluid Play
How can we as referees not interfere with the tactical flow of the game? How can we avoid becoming too narrow and limit the opportunities to take up players space? Must know how to read and anticipate play Must know where to go Must know where not to go

Positioning & Movement
In your groups, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the positioning or position adopted by the referees in the video clips: What can we see or can’t see from the position adopted by the referee in each of the clips? What are the advantages and or disadvantages of adopting this position? What should we be considering during this phase of play? What would be the most advantageous position to adopt as a referee in this situation?

Match Incidents View the video clips and use the ‘still picture’ to draw on to indicate the position the referee should adopt in this situation Answer the 4 questions on the sheet provided for each video clip
