2 What is it? Labour Day or Labor Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the economic and social achievements of workers. Labour Day has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest.

3 as celebrated? The form for the celebration of Labor Day was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday: A street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations“ , followed by a festival for the workers and their families. This became the pattern for Labor Day celebrations.

4 where  is it celebrated? Labour Day is celebrated in many European and Asian countries on May 1. Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September in the U.S. and Canada.  In many countries, May Day is synonymous with International Workers' Day, or Labour Day, which celebrates the social and economic achievements of the labour movement.

5 features The holiday is often regarded as a day of rest and parties. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer recess.
