Today’s Goals… Describe streak. Recognize the hardness of a mineral.
Explain how streak and hardness can be used to identify an unknown mineral.

DENSITY… Density = mass/volume
Density is how closely packed together atoms are in a given volume of space. Density is the amount of matter you have to fill in a specific space. When there is more matter in a given space, it is more dense. Density = mass/volume

What is streak? On your foldable… Streak is the color of the powder of a mineral.

What is hardness? On your foldable… Hardness is a measure of the ability of a mineral to resist scratching.

Hardness Test Lab: Try to scratch all four minerals with your fingernail. Try to scratch a penny using all four minerals. Try to scratch all four minerals with a nail.
