2. The aim of Unit 17 is to equip learners with the basic skills they may need to plan, take part in, and evaluate an expedition. This is a very practical unit and learners should spend plenty of time outside in open environments. During this unit learners are required to take part in at least one overnight trip.
Planning and safety concerns are heavily emphasised within this unit. Learners should gain knowledge of types of equipment that may be used as well as standard procedures that should be followed to ensure the smooth running of an expedition. There should also be a strong emphasis upon practical skills such as camp craft and cooking. Learners should have the opportunity to practise these skills before using them for real. The unit finally looks at reviewing the expedition and identifying areas for improvement.
