1. A Man Worthy of Double Honor
I Timothy 5:17-24

2. A man worthy of double honor must be treated fairly.
Fairly Compensated
Fairly Judged
Fairly Examined & Appointed

3. Fairly Compensated
I Timothy 5:17, “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching.”
In verse 18 Paul is quoting
Deuteronomy 25:4
Luke 10:7
I think that the best understanding is that one half of the double honor is compensation and the other half is the respect that is to be given to those who have been set apart and given the authority to shepherd us.

4. Fairly Compensated “worker deserves his wages” and
“don’t muzzle the ox.”
This is a biblical teaching and principle
I Corinthians 9:14-18
It could be as little as giving them the tools that they need to get the job done.

5. Fairly Judged
I Timothy 5:19, “Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses.”
God here in His wisdom knows that His leaders must be protected from false accusations.
Accusations brought forth out of jealousy, malice, hearsay or misunderstanding.

6. Fairly Judged
I Timothy 5:20, “Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning.”
Two things God takes seriously
Unrepentant sin
Paul’s dealings with it in I Corinthians 5:1-13 & II Corinthians 2:5-11
Showing favoritism
I Timothy 5:21, “keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism.”

7. Fairly Examined & Appointed
I Timothy 5:22, “Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.”
There needs to be lengthy examination of a man before ordaining him to be an elder.
It takes time to know a man’s character
Verse 24
Some men’s sins are obvious
Some men’s sins trail behind them

8. A man worthy of double honor must be treated fairly.
Our God is a just and fair God.
