What Caused WWI? (MAIN) Militarism Alliances
Belief by European nations that to be truly great you need a great military Arms race Keep an army prepared for war Nations sign on to help in case of war Eventually drags all nations into the war

What caused WWI (MAIN) Imperialism Nationalism
Competition for colonies for markets, resources etc.. Lead to mistrust and rivalry Deep devotion to one’s nation Creates competition Independence movements by smaller ethnic groups (Balkins) The MAIN causes led to a powder keg- it just needed a spark

Assassination Alliances bring Europe into War Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austrian Hungary throne) was assassinated by a Serbian Serbians did not like being controlled by Austria Hungary Austria- Hungary declares war on Serbia Russia has an alliance with Serbia and enters the war Germany has an alliance with Austria and enters the war Continues until most of Europe is involved – like dominos

Trench Warfare New Technology Dug underground to escape attack Incredibly miserable Airplanes Machine guns Submarines (U-boats) Poison gas New technology lead to more death

What happened to Russia?
The war was not going well for Russia Military failures, food shortages, inflation All lead to riots and strikes The Bolsheviks lead a revolution that placed the Communist Party in control and kicked out the Czar They withdrew from the war

America German Colonies Allied soldiers Enters on the side of the Allies In China they were attacked and taken by the Japanese IN Africa ¾ were taken by the Allies France and Britain recruited from their colonies Idea if they helped then they could get independence

Death Money disillusionment Death tolls never before seen (tech) 8.5 million soldier deaths Emptied out the treasuries of the nations involved Destroyed infrastructure, farmland, homes War was no longer seen as glorious

Big Four Treaty of Versailles Made all decisions on peace- US, France, Great Britain, and Italy No Central powers, no Russia League of Nations- body of nations to insure peace Central Powers lose territory- boundaries changed

What did the Treaty say/do?
Germany Full responsibility of the war placed on Germany Limits on the size of Germany’s army Could not build or buy weapons Had to pay reparations- $33 Billion over 30 years
