3. What is Central Idea?
CENTRAL IDEA = MAIN IDEA. These terms mean the same thing.
The central idea of a passage is the message that the author is trying to get across to the reader.
The central idea is not the topic. A central idea is stated in a sentence, not just one to two words.
Central idea most commonly refers to informational texts.

4. Finding Central/Main Idea
To find the main idea of a paragraph or passage, ask yourself this question:
What is the most important point the author wants me to understand about the topic?

5. While Reading
Read “Marita’s Bargain”. As you read, identify and record the main idea in each section of the essay. What “bigger” or broader ideas about education do the points from each section develop? Cite evidence from the text to support your response.

10. Determine Central Ideas
Choose two other people to work with. Reread your assigned lines from “Marita’s Bargain”. Use your ebook annotation tools to determine the central ideas of the essay as follows:
Highlight in pink significant details or observations that Gladwell makes in your section
On a note, explain what the details reveal about his main idea in that part of the text
Have students present Gladwell’s central ideas from each major point of each section. There will probably be two groups for each passage. It will be interesting to see if their observations differ.
