7 What is Self-Care? Unfortunately, self-care if seen as a negative. People assume that you are just treating yourself by buying yourself expensive items or just thinking solely about your needs. However, self-care is vital if you want to be a part of a whole group or society. If you are not functioning at the level that you need to function at, you are not benefitting anyone. 5 minutes

8 When do we deserve self-care?
You may have been taught that taking care of yourself means treating yourself well through the purchase of luxury items, foods, and experiences of relaxation and recreation. Within this consumerism idea, self-care is the reward for productivity. How hard you work determines how much self care you deserve. 2 minutes

9 Food for Thought How many advertisements
play into the idea that we need to buy something because we deserve it? 3 minutes

10 So, what is true self-care?
Instead of seeing self-care as related to your ego or buying yourself a reward, you need to look at self-care as collective. Self-care is community care. Your personal wellness is directly linked to the wellness of those around you. The healthier you are, the healthier your relationship to others – friends, parents, teachers, co-workers, etc. Under the collectivism idea of self-care, treating yourself with respect becomes a highly generous act that benefits you and others. 2 minutes

11 So, how do you or can you self-care?
Here are some things that I do: Go for walks/hikes – nature calms me and helps me clear my head Do something creative – I love wood-working, upcycling, etc. When I can use the creative side of my brain, it gives me balance. Explore somewhere new – I love seeing a new place. There is so much to see/do and I forget how invigorated I get even when I walk through a new store, go to a new park, etc. Find a good book – during the school year I sometimes forget to read something besides essays and homework. I need to move away from school and get into a good book again. 18 minutes Make a list like mine of what you could do.
